Collector explains assistance to differently abled

More than Rs 1.28 crore assistance has been granted to mentally challenged people in Ariyalur district of TamiL Nadu during 2011-12, according to Ariyalur District Collector P Senthilkumar.

In a press release here today, he said 1,612 mentally retarded people have benefited from this. He also listed the assistance given to differently abled people under various other schemes, including Rs 11.15 lakh grant to 47 normal persons who had married physically challenged women.

Five people who married women with hearing impairment had been given Rs 1.20 lakh, while a visually challenged woman was given Rs 25,000 as marriage assistance. As many as 256 persons suffering from serious disabilities had been granted Rs.27.30 lakh as maintenance assistance, he said.

Besides, Rs 7.85 lakh was granted as educational assistance to 579 differently abled students. Bank loan of Rs 1.20 lakh had been extended to 40 differently abled persons for taking up self-employment.
