Trichy railway station gaining importance

Tiruchirapalli railway station has emerged one of the major junctions of Southern Railway handling 120 express and passenger trains per day and about 50,000 passengers per day, according to Divisional Railway Manager Ms Manjula Rangarajan.

In a release here today, she said after the completion of the ongoing doubling work of Villupuram - Vriddhachalam - Tricuchchirappalli Dindigul and Tiruchchirappalli- Thanjavur sections, the number of trains and the passenger patronage of the station is expected to increase manifold.

With a view to coping with increasing passenger patronage, capacity augmentation work at Tiruchchirappalli junction has also been taken up, she said.

She said as part of capacity augmentation a goods line with capacity of holding 58 wagons, three stabling lines with capacity of holding 24 coaches and one VIP siding were getting ready at the railway junction.

The dedicated goods line will ease goods movement through Tiruchy junction which otherwise has to pass through the passenger platforms.

The total cost forlaying the track, Providing Signal and tele communications, over Head electric traction and electrical work was Rs 15 crore, she added.
