Madhya Pradesh Public Works Minister Nagendra Singh today informed the Assembly that 8,857 trees were felled for laying a four-lane road between Indore and Ujjain.

In a written reply to Mr Shiv Narayan Jagirdar (ruling Bharatiya Janata Party), the Minister said, "The Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation Limited has completed the project. The contract enshrines a provision for planting ten saplings for every tree felled." The company planted 88,570 saplings but several perished.

However, the company is constantly replacing the dead ones and taking care of the saplings.

"The total number of authorised colonies in the assembly constituencies of Indore District is 1,049 while the illegal ones number 500. Directives have been issued for taking action against builders of the unauthorised colonies," Urban Administration and Development Minister Babulal Gaur said in a written reply to Mr Jitu Jirati.

In a written reply to Mr Ramniwas Rawat (main opposition Congress), Mr Gaur accepted that the then Chief Municipal Officer (CMO) bypassed rules in allotting the Krishi Upaj Mandi office in Sheopur District headquarters to a political party for setting up its district office.
