Iran shock US, qualify for WCK-2012 semis

Iran caused a major upset as they shocked United States of America by 45-41 in a do-or-die four-nation Pool D match in the men's section of the 3rd Pearls World Cup Kabaddi 2012 being hosted by the Punjab Government at the packed Nehru Stadium here today.

Before this crucial match, both teams have two wins each and Iran became the first team to qualify for semi-final. US, Afghanistan and Kenya, the other teams in this pool, have made their exit from the tournament.

Iran and US were evenly matches and they traded raid for raid to earn points. In the spell-bound encounter, Iran and USA shared honoured as they were tied 21-all at the end of first half.

Iran's leading raider Mustafa Hussein top-scored with ten points while Syan contronuted 7 points. Stoppers Ali Raza and Asgar Aizm bagged 5 and 3 points, respectively.

US raiders Inderdeep Singh, Baljinder Singh, Kanwar Sandh earned 16, 5 and 3 points respectively, whereas their stoppers Jaskaran, Sandeep Singh and Kulwinder Singh got 4, 3 and 2 points, respectively.

In an inconsequential Pool 'D' match Argentina beat Kenya with the margin of 55-42 and registered their first victory.

Argentina were leading by 28-21 points at interval Argentinan raiders Yuri Mair, Alexandro and Evan got 17, 11 and 6 points, respectively, whereas their stoppers Kristiyan and Sebba logged 6 and 4 points, respectively.

In a women's Pool B encounter, Malaysia overcame USA with a difference of 47-18 points to brighten their chances to qualify for semi-finals. The Malaysian players looked more determined and aggressive in their play, especially on resumption. Malaysian raiders Manpreet Kaur (9), Parmajit Kaur (8) and Amandeep Kaur (8) gave a consistent display to fashion their team's well-earned verdict. Their stoppers Mandeep Kaur, Rekha and Liza got 10, 7 and 3 points, respectively.

American raiders Guramrit Kaur scored 9 points whereas stoppers Meena Devi and Babli Devi earned 3 and 2 points, respectively.
