11 convicted in Guwahati molestation case
A magistrate's court in Guwahati on Friday convicted eleven people, including prime accused Amar Jyoti Kalita, for the mass molestation of a girl outside a pub on the night of July 9 in Guwahati, triggering nationwide outrage after a local channel beamed the incident.
However, four people were acquitted in the case, including the reporter of Newslive channel, Gourab Jyoti Neog who was accused of instigating the mob so that he could film the incident.
Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) S P Moitra convicted prime accused Amarjyoti Kalita and ten others under various sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The key accused in the case Amar Jyoti Kalita was arrested by police in Varanasi on July 23 after he eluded cops for several days.
The victim, a 17-year-old class XI student, was molested by a mob after she purportedly got into a scuffle outside a pub in Guwahati's G S Road on July 9.
Video clips of a nearly 30-minute-long ordeal that showed the girl being abused and molested by the mob were shown on local television channels and uploaded on the Internet sites sparking a national outcry.
