Chinese workers have been forced to build a massive residential complex around a tomb after locals in north China's Shanxi province refused a compensation amount for the construction on a burial site.

The bizarre circumstances arose after locals in north China's Shanxi province refused a 160,000 dollars offered as compensation for the sacred land where their deceased ancestors lie buried.

Thye have now been forced to labor next to the tomb isolated on a hillock in Taiyuan city, the New York Daily News reports.

According to the report, the bizarre construction work follows a similar incident in China where two families refused to allow their homes to be demolished to make way for a four-lane highway.

The houses were eventually demolished after a compensation deal was hammered out, the report said.
