Despite large scale protest by farmers, the state government released Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu in accordance with Supreme Court directions from Krishna Raja Sagar Reservoir past midnight last night.
The release of water from the reservoir was confirmed by the Irrigation Department.
A total of 10,000 cusecs was released from four gates at the level of 80 feet in the reservoir. Another 5000 cusecs has been released for canals.
The Supreme Court has directed the state government to release 50,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for five days at 10,000 cusecs a day.
The Mandya District administration had already clamped prohibitory orders under Sec-144 in a radius of one km from KRS.
Heavy police security was deployed around the reservoir.
