Opposition Janata Dal(S) and Congress today accused the BJP government in Karnataka of failing to book erring top officials who helped mining barons commit large scale illegal mining that cost the state a staggering Rs 2,00,000 crore during its rule.
During Question Hour, JD(S) leader Basavaraj Horatti raised the issue and accused the state government of doing little to ensure punishment to the top officials in IAS and IFS cadre. The government had failed to initiate criminal proceedings against over a dozen top officials who had colluded with illegal miners.
Chief Minsiter Jagadish Shettar informed the House that action would be initiated against 300 officials and forest staff involved in aiding illegal mining.
Leader of the Opposition S R Patil said the government had done little other than serving notices to the officials.
It did little other than 'studying' the replies filed by the officials and this had taken the government nearly two years till now.
