The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2.30 p.m. Friday following an uproar over Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma's speech during the debate on foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail.

When Sharma referred to former civil servant and independent member N.K Singh's speech Thursday on the issue, opposition members took objection. N.K. Singh was principal secretary to prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee August 2001-June 2004 during the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.

The chair adjourned the house till 2.30 p.m. after repeated appeals to members to quieten down failed.
