Nearly a week after two rescued sex workers claimed they were sexually exploited by patrolling policemen; the police department on Thursday night suspended three lower-ranked police officials for their alleged involvement. Hawaldar Vaman Naik, Santosh Vengurlekar, and Constable Vijay Gaikwad were suspended in an order by director general of police Kishan Kumar. The two girls had stated to a government panel that a pimp by name Anwar Shah had been taking them to policemen posted at three police stations - Calangute, Mapusa and Bicholim - for the past three years. They further claimed that the policemen sexually exploited them without pay at various places in the northern coastal belt. While the girls, who are from Mumbai and Jharkhand, could only remember the name of Vaman Naik, the two others were identified in a photo identification parade. The crime branch, which is investigating the case, said more policemen could be involved as the photographs of all beat policemen from the three police stations during that period are still in the process of being collected. Another session of identification parade is on the cards.
