Rail projects facing shortage of funds: Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury
The progress of work on a number of Indian Railway projects was very slow because of non-availability of funds, the Lok Sabha was informed today.
In a written reply, Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said considering the large number of projects, there was a huge requirement of funds.
"Major projects numbering 198, involving expansion of rail network and capacity augumentation under new lines, gauge conversion, doubling, electrification, workshops and metropolitian transport projects required Rs 1,53,460 crore for completion as on 1.4.2012," he said.
The Minister said the capacity augumentation projects were highly capital intensive and were financed through Gross Budgetary Support.
Internal resources on the other hand, he said, were being used for renewal and replacement of assets and other developmental works.
