The country's top veteran players will be seen in action when the nation's biggest prize money event in the category, the 17th GVK-AISTA Senior National tennis championship gets underway at the SAAP Tennis Complex at Lal Bahadur Stadium here on December 9.
Events will be held in both singles and doubles for the 45+, 55+ and 65+ categories while the 75+ players can vie for honours in doubles.
Qualifying rounds will be held on the first day while the main draw will commence after its inauguration by Sports Minister Vatti Vasanth Kumar.
Tournament Director B S Krishna Reddy and Secretary A Rambabu told reporters here today that the prize money in the ranking tournament will be to the tune of Rs ten lakh with the winner in each singles category getting richer by Rs 30, 000.
Former Davis Cupper S Narendranath, Tamil Nadu player S Settu and S Parekh from Maharashtra are the defending champions in the 45+, 55+ and 65+ singles categories.
Foreign flavour comes in the form of veterans coming over from Nepal and Australia. The prominent outstation entries will be Yogesh Shah (Gujarat), Meghanathan, Muthu Indrajit (both Tamil Nadu), K Vijay Kumar (Kerala), Vijay Shane (Maharashtra) and R R Ramesh, B S Tulsiram, V R Kulkarni and Vishwanath Ramu (all Karnataka), The singles winner will garner 140 points while the doubles combination gets 100 points for their winning effort.
