Despite delimitation, Maninagar is a cakewalk for Modi

Though the Maninagar assembly constituency, from where Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is contesting, is considered a safe seat for him with a strong base of BJP supporters, the delimitation exercise could affect his vote base and reduce the lead he established over his nearest rival during last assembly elections in 2007.

Mr Modi is being challenged by Congress candidate Shweta Bhatt, wife of controversial IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, who has accused Mr Modi of instructing police to allow the majority community to teach a lesson to Muslims on February 28, 2002, following the Godhra train carnage, which left 59 karsevaks dead.

According to the statisties there were 3,28,000 voters in Maninagar constituency in 2007 but after the delimitation, Amraiwadi area has become a separate constituency. Now Maninagar has only 2,18,595 voters. The delimitation also marked a reduction of four wards in the constituency. But Isanpur and Ghodasar which were in Daskroi assembly constituency, have been included in Maninagar. Moreover, six booths of Kankaria and 10 booths of Danilimda wards have been included in Maninagar.

The constituency is dominated by white collar voters. But the reduction in voters would result in the reduction in Mr Modi's lead.
