The DMK, which had supported the Bharat Bandh against foreign direct invesment (FDI) in multi-brand retail, today said it will support the UPA government in voting in the Rajya Sabha to keep the ''communal forces'' at bay.
The DMK expressed apprehension over the government's decision allowing 51 per cent FDI in multi-brand retail sector but said the party will support the government.
''When the NDA was in power, the BJP had supported FDI in retail but now they are opposing it. The BJP has no credibility on the issue. We can not rely on them,'' DMK MP Tiruchi Siva said while participating in the debate on the motion on the issue of FDI in multi-brand retail.
Mr Siva said the DMK has been supporting the UPA in voting and the government should complete full term as the country should not witness frequent elections.
''We have never left our friends midway,'' he added.
However, he urged the government to address the genuine apprehensions and fears of the people on the issue of FDI in retail.
He said about four crore people will be displaced due to FDI and the decision will lead to manufacturing job loss in the country.
