Congress in Karnataka today urged the BJP government not to release Cauvery water even if it amounts to attracting contempt proceedings.
The Supreme Court yesterday ordered Karnataka to release 10,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu till Sunday and asked the Cauvery Monitoring Committee to come out with a status report on availability of water and its requirement in the two riparian states.
Speaking to reporters here, KPCC President G Parameshwar said the state government should not release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, even if it leads to attracting contempt of the Supreme Court.
He said a delegation of Congress leaders from Karnataka will soon meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi to explain the ground situation in the cauvery basin in Karnataka and depleting levels of water in reservoirs after a tardy monsoon this year.
Dr Parameshwara blamed the government for not presenting the facts properly before the apex court, Cauvery River Authority (CRA) and Cauvery Monitoring Committee (CRM).
'The Chief Minister did not bother to take Congress party into confidence over the Cauvery issue. He did not even consult the opposition parties before meeting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in Bangalore recently,' he said.
