Eden Test: India score 273-7 at stumps
Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar hit 76 runs as India scored 273 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their first innings on the opening day of the third Test match against England at Eden Gardens here on Wednesday.
The English bowlers dominated the day and sent seven Indian batsmen to the pavilion with skipper MS Dhoni (22*) and Zaheer Khan (0*) to resume the innings for the home side on Thursday.
India earlier won the toss and elected to bat. Openers, Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag gave India a promising start as they added 47 runs int he first wicket partnership.
India received a jolt when Sehwag was run out on his personal score of 23 runs.
Gautam Gambhir scored 60 runs but failed to convert it into big score.
In-form Cheteshwar Pujara scored 16 runs while Virat Kohli hit only six runs with his willow.
Sachin Tendulkar returned to form and played a gutsy knock of 76 runs under pressure and hit 13 boundaries in his 155-ball innings.
Yuvaj Singh hammered four boundaries and a six as he scored 32 runs off 54 balls. Singh and Sachin added 79 runs in the fifth wicket partnership.
James Anderson remained the pick of the English bowlers as he scalped three wickets on Wednesday. Spinner
Monty Panesar picked up two wickets.
The home team brought pacer Ishant Sharma back into the playing 11 after more than 10 months replacing off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who is down with flu.
England and India are now placed 1-1 in the series.
