Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J jayalalithaa today announced a slew of measures to the tune of Rs 69.88 crore to instill confidence in the minds of farmers and to save their standing samba crop, besides relief of Rs 13,692 per acre for crop damage under the crop insurance scheme.
Ms Jayalalithaa, who chaired a review meeting in the wake of Supreme Court directing Karnataka to release 10,000 cusecs per second of cauvery water per day, said though the court order comes as a solace to Tamil Nadu, the quantum of water directed by it would not be sufficient to save the standing samba crop.
Noting that the government, in the meeting, discussed alternative measures to be adopted to save the crops, she said supply of three phase power for 12 hours -- six hours in the morning and six hours in the evening -- which was being provided to farmers in Cauvery Delta areas from November 29 to operate the pump sets for drawing ground water for irrigation, would be extended till February next year.
