Expressing concern over the frequent arrest and harassment of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Lankan Navy, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to urge the Sri Lankan authorities to immediately release the 40 arrested fishermen and their five boats without filing any cases against them.
In a Demi Official letter to the Prime Minister, copies of which were released to the media here, Ms Jayalalithaa said the detention of 40 fishermen (22 from Nagapattinam and 18 from Karaikal in Puducherry) while fishing in the Bay of Bengal, would only escalate the tensions between the two countries, besides causing immense anxiety and unrest amongst the fishing community.
She appealed to the Prime Minister to intervene and take urgent steps to secure the release of all the 40 fishermen, who were remanded in Judicial Custody till December 10, without filing any cases against them.
