Mumbai: Part of building collapses; 2 killed
Two employees of JSW Ispat Steel Limited were killed when a major portion of a slab of Victoria House building in Mumbai's Lower Parel area collapsed on Monday.
At least six others were reportedly injured in the mishap.
"It is unfortunate that lives of two beloved colleagues of JSW Ispat Steel Limited could not be saved," said the steel maker in a statement.
"In view of the timely action taken by the Company, 6 employees from the debris were taken out and they are undergoing medical treatment in the city hospital."
JSW Steel Limited and some of its Group Companies including JSW Ispat Steel Limited have one of their offices in Mumbai at first and second floor and small reception area at ground floor at Victoria House in Lower Parel's Pandurang Budhkar Marg.
Incidentally it is also the registered office of JSW Ispat Steel Limited. The constructed property was acquired by JSW Steel Limited in the year 2005.
"Today in the morning hours, part of the building collapsed causing loss of lives and injuries to some of the employees, while all the records, infrastructure and IT systems in the collapsed area have been damaged / destroyed," the company said.
"This event appeared to have happened due to certain modifications being done in the ground floor which does not belong to JSW Group."
The company said its immediate priority is to provide all assistance and the best medical help to the affected employees.
Meanwhile, several others are feared to be trapped under the debris, a police official said.
Rescue operation is currently going on.
At least six fire engines reached the spot.
The injured were taken to KEM Hospital, reports said.
Several people were evacuated since 11 am after a huge crack was noticed in the building.
