Won't tolerate slapping elderly man: MNS
The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) on Monday said it will not tolerate action of party corporator Nitin Nikam, who was caught on camera assaulting a 65-year-old man.
The MNS said party supremo Raj Thackeray was upset after seeing the visuals.
"We can't tolerate a senior citizen being slapped," Akhilesh Chaubey, General Secretary (Legal), MNS, was quoted as saying.
"Raj Thackeray was upset seeing the visuals," Chaubey said.
In footage broadcast by national news channels, Nikam was seen brutally slapping Kalyan DV Patil who works as a private contractor with the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC).
According to reports, Nikam had summoned Patil following complaints about delays in water pipeline repair work that had caused water shortage in the Ganeshwadi locality.
Patil later alleged that when he went to file a complaint against Nikam, the police only registered a non-cognizable offence.
Nikam defended his action and told a news channel that he had the best interests of the people at heart.
The MNS and its parent party the Shiv Sena have frequently been the target of national outcries against the groups' heavy-handed moral policing and intolerant regional discrimination.
