Chennai, Pune host marathons
The cities of Chennai and Pune organised marathons on Sunday as part of an endeavour to promote health through sports.
In Chennai, over 6000 runners participated in the Wirpo Chennai Marathon 2012, which featured three categories, the half marathon, marathon and the 10-kilometre race.
"We have three categories of run, which is a full marathon, half marathon and a 10k run. The 6300 runners are spread over all the three categories. Besides this, we have a charity partner with United Way, who have also organised a run for the CEO's and more importantly we have a run for the special kids, 100 special kids have come and participated in the run with us," said Ramvishwanathan, organiser of the marathon.
In Pune city, former Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Suresh Kalmadi flagged off the 27th Pune International Marathon.
The total prize money is Rs. 25,00, 000 (USD 46,074). The first prize in the Men's Full Marathon is Rs. 300,000 (USD 5,529) and in the Women's Half Marathon is Rs. 150,000. The first Indian winner of the Men's Full Marathon and the Women's Half Marathon will receive Rs. 50,000.
