All arrears to fishermen would be cleared before Dec: K Babu

Minister for Fisheries, Ports and Excise K Babu today said all the arrears in the welfare scheme to the fishermen would be cleared before December 31.

While inaugurating the Kerala Pradesh Mathysa Thozhilali congress at Jawahar library hall here, Mr Babu said the collections to the welfare scheme of fishermen was stalled since 2008.

"Now the government has begins to collect the funds to the fishermen welfare fund and collected about Rs one crore so far mainly from the exporters of the state," Mr Babu said.

He said the government is also planning to increase the welfare concession to the fishermen and six crore rupees scholarship arrears to the fishermen student would be distributed soon.

He said the distribution of Kersone to boats of the fishermen through the Mathysa fed and for this the government had appointed Chief secretary to look after this.

Earlier, the distribution of Kerosene to the boats were provided by Civil supplies and resulted irregularity while distribution.

A meeting would be called with fishermen organisations soon to discuss it, he added.

The government also issues notice for revenue recovery, those who found faulty to remit the amount to welfare funds.

The Minister also said within three years, the government would construct 12000 houses for the fishermen and for this purpose the government had raise the housing loan to two lakhs from the existing Rs 50,000.

The government would borrow Rs 600 crore including from the NABARD and HUDCO. Nabard would provide Rs 50 crore this financial year and the remaining Rs 150 crore would be given later, he added.

All the houses would be set up in 335 village areas, out of which 222 are situated in coastal areas.

Mr Babu said the pension to the fishermen would be given through bank from December and only old aged people pension would given through money orders.

Kerala pradesh Mathysa thozhilali congress working chairman Augustine Gomes, MLA A P Abdulla kutty, and district leaders of Congress party also attended the function.
