Expressing concern over the alleged misuse of the provisions of Information Technology Act to curb the right of freedom of speech and expression, the Supreme Court today decided to examine the issue of recommending suitable amendments in Section 66A of the IT Act.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir indicated that the apex court may take suo motu cognisance of the issue.
Two girls were recently arrested by the police for opposing Mumbai shutdown on the death of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray.
The girls arrested under Sec 66A of the IT Act were later released on furnishing a bail bond of Rs 15,000 each.
The arrest led to huge public outcry against the police action and the government suspended the SP as well as the SHO.
