Three shops were completely gutted and another partially in a major fire that broke out in a building near the Kannur Railway Station in the early hours of today.
Sources said the fire started from a two-storeyed building on the MA Road, near the railway station and soon spread to the shops. However, no casualty was reported. The damage to property was estimated to be roughly around Rs 4 crore.
Some taxi drivers who noticed the blaze informed the fire station and police.
Seven fire engines from Kannur, Mattanur, Thalassery, Thaliparamba, Koothuparamba and Payannor rushed to the spot and doused the fire at around 0530 hrs, according to Rajeevan K, Kannur Fire Station Officer.
He said they got the information at about 0410 hrs and reached the spot within ten minutes and soon brought the flames under control.
District Collector Rathan U Kelkar and District Police Chief Rahul R Nair visited the spot.
