The office of Bureau of India Standards (BIS) will not be shifted from the capital city to Kochi for the next one year, Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor, said today.
An assurance in this regard was received from Mr K V Thomas, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Mr Tharoor said in a press release here.
Mr Thomas said the Central Government had been writing to the State Government for the past three years to provide space for the office in the capital city.
However, neither the previous LDF Government nor the present UDF Government had agreed to provide the space for the office, Mr Thomas added.
If the request was not acceded to within one more year then the BIS office would be shifted from here, Mr Thomas said.
However, Mr Tharoor, who represents Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha Constituency, said he would put pressure on the State Government to allot the required space in Thiruvanathapuram for the office.
