Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today said the time has come for the North Eastern Region (NER) to realise the need for economic independence and the region is in need of sustainable development backed by stable economic policies and programmes.
Addressing as the Chief Guest of the inaugural function of the 5th General Conference of the North East Students' Organisations (NESO) at Kohima, Mr Rio said the theme of the Conference 'Our Resource- Our Future' and in a new global age where the pursuit of economic progress has become the predominant aim, is most appropriate and timely.
He said the future of the NER lies white working in a planned manner, where the region does not plunder its resources in environment and rich biodiversity of the region. The natural resources of oil and minerals have the potential to bring economic boom even as the region need to constantly improve the capacity and calibre of competent human resources.
Mr Rio said the first and foremost issue is to resolve outstanding political issues and bring political stability to the region.
Resolution of political conflicts and consequent containment of insurgencies will ensure political stability and prevalence of peace and security, he observed, adding this would create an environment congenial for infrastructure development and investments that will equip the region to facilitate international trade and commerce.
