Asserting that the Congress-led UPA was on a strong wicket on the FDI issue, Union Minister Farooq Abdullah today called on UPA's second major partner and DMK President M Karunanidhi and thanked him for pledging his party's support to the government in the event of voting in Parliament.
Talking to reporters after a nearly 20-minute meeting with Mr Karunanidhi at his Gopalapuram residence, Mr Farooq Abdullah said he thanked the DMK Chief for his decision to support the UPA regime during voting on the FDI issue.
"We are very grateful to him', he added.
Asked about the Congress yielding to the BJP-led Opposition demand for a debate with voting, Mr Farooq said "the UPA government is on a strong wicket on the FDI issue".
Mr Farooq, who is in the city to participate in the Wind Power India-2012 function, said "Mr Karunanidhi was very close to my father. I came here to pay my respects to him".
The Union Minister's meeting comes a day after the DMK Chief, climbed down from his hard stand, and said his party would support the UPA regime during voting in Parliament to thwart the 'communal' BJP's move to topple the government.
Mr Karunanidhi said despite having differences on the FDI issue, the DMK would support the Congress-led UPA with a sense of bitterness, to keep the BJP at bay.
He said'DMK is one of the strongest parties in the UPA Government.
