Govt keen on opening up airport
The Puducherry administration is keen to starting the operations in Puducherry Airport at the earliest possible in the interest of tourism promotion.
According to an official release here today, the runway of the airport has been expanded 1550 meters which can handle ATR type aircrafts.In order to ensure early operation of the Airport, Tourism Minister P Rajavelu invited Airlines operators and convened the meeting at Airport Authority of India Conference Hall, Chennai yesterday.The potential of flight service from Puducherry to other major cities was explained through a Power Presentation by the Director, Tourism Department, Puducherry.
The viability of flight service from Puducherry Airport considering the grounds of minimal fuel cost, cheaper airport tax and high flow of French tourist was delivered in the meeting.
After close interaction with Airline Operators, Air India and Jet Airways said they would consider the operation of the ATR aircrafts from Puducherry subject to approval of their Management. Spice Jet Representatives informed that they have already completed marketing survey and they will come up with operation of Scheduled flights between Puducherry and Bangalore soon. Mr Rajavelu reiterated that the Government of Puducherry will extend necessary assistance to the Airline operators for commencing their flight service in Puducherry.
