The Kerala Government has decided to dismantle the Independence Struggle Golden Jubilee Memorial in front of Durbar Hall in Secretariat as this has become a shame on the cultural and aesthetic value of the state, Minister for Rural Development and Culture K C Joseph today said.
Briefing newspersons on the decisions taken a cabinet meeting here, Mr Joseph said Independence Struggle Golden Jubilee Memorial would be dismantled, saying this memorial as one that lacks artistic value.
Based on the findings of the expert committee it has been decided to dismantle the memorial and landscaping would be done to the area as part of beautification works in the Secretariat.
The place has become a haven for stray dogs and the terracotta sculptures are in a state of ruin and were not fit for visitors, the Minsiter said.
The memorial had been in the centre of several controversies ever since it was erected in 2001 at a cost of Rs 23 lakh, he added.
