A 20-pound dress by Asda, which was created in response to a poll that saw Michelle Obama named as most impressive female dresser, has sold out almost overnight, it has been revealed.

Thousands of shoppers rushed to snap up The Michelle - a black and metallic rose-print dress dubbed The Ultimate Dress by the store.

The dress, inspired by the First Lady's election night dress, was a simple prom-style dress with a full skirt, nipped-in waist and little cap sleeves, and formed part of George at Asda's Impress Dress collection, launched last week in time for the festive season.

The Michelle dress came about after the US First lady was voted most impressive female dresser by George shoppers, who put the lawyer ahead of such A-list fashion icons as Gwyneth Paltrow and Victoria Beckham, who came second and third respectively in the George poll.

As soon as the metallic midi Michelle dress hit the shelves, the store reported a surge of purchases online and in store, resulting in dress sales 41 percent higher than they were on this week in 2011.

A red lace Carol Vorderman-inspired dress at 18 pounds was the next biggest seller and had sold out the following day.

The third biggest hitter was a MODA VIctoria Beckham inspired dress in red and black panelling, selling for 16 pounds.

The exact Michelle and Carol styles will not be restocked, but Asda says there will be plenty more dresses stocked in time for the festive party period.

"At this time of the year a lot of women are after a show-stopping outfit. Our Michelle Obama inspired flower jacquard dress was an instant hit amongst shoppers and is perfect for any event on the festive calendar whether it be a winter wedding or the office party," the Daily Mail quoted brand director Fiona Lambert as saying.

"The Impress Dress collection has been flying off the shelves this week and we're urging women to get their hands on their favourite before we sell through completely.

"Rest assured we are re-stocking the site with several new 'wow' dresses as fast as they are selling, so even if women have missed out on a particular style they will still have the opportunity to find the perfect, affordable show stopper this Christmas," Lambert added.

The top 5 power dressers were:

Michelle Obama
Gwyneth Paltrow
Victoria Beckham
Carol Vorderman
Karren Brady
