Kerala Tourism has bagged the CNBC Awaaz travel award for 2012. The state was recognised for being the "best destination for both domestic and foreign tourists", a state official said Wednesday.

Kerala Tourism Secretary Suman Billa received the award at a ceremony held at the Hotel Centaur in Srinagar last week. It was conferred the 'best travel and tourism state'.

"It is a recognition of the combined efforts of the private and public sectors in the travel and tourism sectors of Kerala to maintain the state as the best destination for both domestic and foreign tourists," said Billa.

The awards citation said Kerala was adjudged the 'Best Travel and Tourism State' for constantly striving to push the boundaries of excellence.

Kerala had won the 'most preferred destination' prize at the CNBC Awaaz awards in 2010 besides bagging the 'best tourism board' honour.

In its sixth year, the CNBC Awaaz travel awards recognise the best in stellar organisations and individuals who are championing, driving and supporting tourism in the country.

The CNBC Awaaz travel awards are based on an exhaustive consumer response study, conducted across 11 cities with over 1,918 respondents across all the segments, including adventure, general public and corporates.

Every year, travellers are asked to vote for the travel and tourism companies they believe deserve recognition for the quality of service they offer.

The voting process is done using online and SMS as the response medium supported by a month long communications campaign which encourages national participation.
