Centre offers help to Bengal to find out reasons behind infant deaths
Minister of state for health A H Khan Chowdhury today offered Central assistance to West Bengal in finding out the reason for infant deaths, with latest reference to 19 deaths at the Malda Medical College and Hospital.
Mr Khan Chowdhury said he was saddened by the events of the last few days wherein 19 deaths of infants have been reported from the Malda Medical College and Hospital.
'I have spoken to the chief medical officer of the hospital yesterday and am monitoring the situation personally,' the Minister, who hails from Malda, stated in faxed message here.
'I have also written to the Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Kumari Mamata Banerjee, assuring her of extending all possible help from the Centre. I have also informed her that if she agrees we could send a team of experts from the Health Ministry to find out the reasons as to why so many deaths of infants have taken place in different government hospitals in West Bengal in recent times,' Mr Chowdhury said.
Health is essentially a state subject and the Central government provides all possible help to the states so that they are able to meet the health needs of the people.
