State Congress leadership heaved a sigh of relief when Junagadh Municipal Corporation's Deputy Mayor and Congress leader Girish Kotecha withdrew his nomination as an independent from Junagadh constituency today.
Twentyfour municipal councillors also withdrew their resignations. They had tendered their resignation in support of Mr Kotecha soon after the party high command alloted the ticket to Bhikhubhai Joshi.
According to Gujarat Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi, party co-incharge of the state Ashok Tanwar today met Mr Kotecha and his supporters and persuaded them to reconsider their decision. Mr Kotecha and his supporters assured Mr Tanwar that now they would work for the party, Mr Doshi added.
Mr Kotecha, who has a considerable clout in Junagadh which is the only municipal corporation in the state that has a Congress mayor, had resigned from the party alongwith his supporters and filed his nomination as an independent.
