DMK Member of Parliament J K Riteesh was today arrested by Chennai City police on charges of land grabbing.

Police said the DMK MP from Ramanathapuram was arrested when he came to the Mylapore Police station to give his of explanation on a complaint that he had allegedly grabbed land to the tune of Rs 20 crore at Sriperumbudur, about 40 km from here.

Later, he was taken to the Chennai City Police Commissioner's Office where Riteesh said the case was foisted against him.

Talking to reporters, the DMK MP said in fact he owed money from the complainant.

"But the case was registered on the contrary that I cheated him", he said, adding that he would prove his innocence in a court of law.

He said his arrest was a vindictive act of the ruling AIADMK, which had launched a massive crackdown against alleged land grabbers after it came to power in May last year.

Several DMK Leaders, former Ministers, present and former MLAs were arrested on charges of land grabbing during the previous DMK regime.

Cases were also registered against several leaders for allegedly amassing wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income and DVAC officials also raided their premises in this connection.
