DMK's lifeline to UPA, pledges support on FDI vote : M Karunanidhi
After steadfastly opposing it right from the beginning, the DMK, the second largest ally of the Congress-led UPA, today sprang a surprise and said it would support the Government in the event of voting in Parliament on FDI in multi-brand retail trade to keep the "communal" BJP at bay.
Talking to reporters after issuing a statement that the DMK would support the government to thwart the BJP's move to destabilise it, DMK President M Karunanidhi said his party was neither compelled nor pressured while taking the decision to support the UPA during voting.
Asked about DMK's firm stand that it would not support FDI in retail trade, the DMK patriarch said, 'going by the BJP's attitude, which has been causing uproar and stalling the Parliament for the last four days, it was clear that its hidden agenda was to usher in a change of guard at the Centre.
'The BJP and other parties have been insisting on a debate with voting on FDI in Parliament and had been stalling its functioning with an hidden agenda of destabilising the government', he added.
Keeping this in mind, the DMK decided to support the Congress-led UPA government during voting in Parliament to keep the BJP and other 'communal forces' from toppling the government and prevent it from coming to power.
