The mortal remains of senior DMK leader and former Minister Samayanallur S Selvaraj (67) was consigned to flames at his native Meenakshipuram Pudur village, here this evening.
Selvaraj, who had been ailing for some months passed away at a private hospital in Chennai last evening. He is the second former DMK minister to die in the last few days after the party lost its veteran worker Veerapandi S Arumugham. He had served as Minister for Adi Dravidar Welfare, Hill Tribes and Bonded Labour in the erstwhile DMK regime during 1996-2001.
His body was brought to his house in Madurai city for public homage this morning. Cutting across party lines, leaders of various political parties and hundreds of people and party workers paid their homage. Later, the mortal remains of the DMK leader was taken in a procession to the cremation ground.
DMK Treasurer and former Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin led the procession.
