Sequel to Diwali: Karthigai deepam celebrated
More than ten lakh people from various parts of India, including those from abroad, today witnessed the 'Karthigai Maha Deepam', lit atop the 2,668-foot Annamalai Hills in this temple town, this evening.
At the stroke of 1800 hrs, soon after the Ardhanareeswarar deity was taken around the 'flagpost' of the famous Lord Arunachaleswarar temple, the Maha Deepam was lit atop the Hills, amidst chanting of "Annamalayarukku Arohara" by the teeming devotees.
On the hill top, the 'Maha Deepam' was lit in a big copper utensil, filled with large quantities of camphor and ghee.
The Deepam could be seen from miles away around for 10 to 11 days.
The cauldron was filled with thousands of kg of ghee. A wick measuring more than 300 m was made using special cloth and was inserted in the cauldron.
Earlier, in the day, thousands of devotees witnessed the Bharani Deepam lit at 0400 hrs in the morning.
