The bandh called by angry residents and members of several organisations, including political parties, today evoked good response as the entire town was shut off to protest against the proposed plan to dump spent fuel from Koodankulam Nuclear Plant at the abandoned mine pits of KGF.
People and politicians alike have expressed strong protest against the proposal and all political parties, including the local leaders of the Congress, supported today's bandh. The Public sector Bharat Earth Movers Ltd, which produces major equipment for the forces at its sprawling facility here, was also shut off for the day as thousands of its employees spontaneously supported the bandh.
Official sources, however, said the agitation remained peaceful and no incident of violence was reported. However, irate public burnt a cut out of Minister of state for Railways, K H Muniyappa who belongs to this Kolar district to show their ire against the union government.
