Iron-ore production in Chhattisgarh's Bailadila hill mines of the NMDC Ltd., India's largest iron ore exporter and producer in public sector, was suspended Thursday as workers stayed away from duty, trade unions and officials said.
The trade unions managed to observe a total strike at all the five mines of the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) spread out in Dantewada district's forested Bacheli and Kirandul areas in protest against central government's decision to allow 10 percent disinvestment in the NMDC, a Navratna company.
"It was a hundred percent halt in iron ore production as well as in transportation because of the monopoly" of the trade unions laid siege to a check post at Bacheli and forcibly stopped employees from joining work, NMDC officials based at Bacheli claimed.
