Funds sought to develop tourism

Puducherry Welfare and Tourism Minister P.Rajavelu today urged Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram to earmark sufficient funds for Pondy for development and introduction of new tourism related projects in the Union Territory.

Mr Rajavelu, who is currently on an official visit to New Delhi today, called on Mr Chidambaram and apprised him of the successful implementation of various projects for development of tourism in Puducherry,according to an official release here.

To ensure greater and more broad based projects the territorial government wanted sufficient funds,he said and pleaded with the Union Minister for sanction of sufficient funds to launch newer projects. Mr Chidambaram assured to consider the request.

Mr Rajavelu also called on the Union Ministerfor Social Justice and Empowerment Kumari Selja and referred to the vacancies in various posts in the department here and sought her intervention to fill the vacancies. He also pleaded with the Central Minister for sufficient funds for promotion of wellbeing of women and children through the department in the Union Territory.

Mr Rajavelu, during his meeting with the Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Mr P L Punia discussed with him various schemes for ameliorating the lot of the SCs and STs and for their development. Mr Rajavelu also extended an invitation to the Chairman Mr Punia to visit Puducherry. Accepting readily the invitation the Chairman promised that he would visit the Union Territory during next month.
