School Bus skids into canal, 31 students hurt

As many as 34 people, including 31 school students, mostly girls aged between 6 to 14 of Kadachira Higher Secondary School, were injured when the driver lost control of the school bus and the vehicle skidded into the Kottur Canal at Kadachira near Edakkad, about 15 km from here, this morning, Police said a major accident was, however, averted as the vehicle got stuck on the railing.

According to police, Abishek, a student, suffered serious injuries and was admitted to Pariyaram Medical College.

As many as 26 students were admitted to AKG Hospital and five at Koyili Hospital.

Driver Balan,School Teacher Veena and a helper who were also injured were also admitted to AKG Hospital.

All the injured were out of danger, hospital sources said.

Police said about 80 students were in the bus coming from Poduvachery when the accident occurred.

Police and locals rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to private hospitals at Kannur.

Tourism Minister A P Anilkumar and MLA A P Abdullakutty visited the injured.
