A dawn-to-dusk hartal is being observed in this district by the CPI(M) today in protest against the arrest of former CPI(M) Idukki District Secretry MM Mani in connection with the murder of an INTUC worker.
28-yr-old Anchery Baby was murdered on November 13, 1982.
Police said normal life in the district was affected due to the hartal as motor vehicles kept off the roads.
Most shops and small eateries remained closed. People especially visitors to the hilly district and those who stay in hotels and lodges, had to walk the extra distance to get food. State-owned KSRTC Bus services and private buses were also not operating.
But, vehicles from neighbouring south-Indian states carrying Ayyappa devotees are being allowed to continue their journey by the agitators.
No violence was reported in connection with the hartal in the district till this time, police said.
