The Puducherry unit of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) today deplored the late convening of All party meeting here on the issue of holding loal body elections.

At the meeting here today by the state election commission, the DMK representatives wondered what was the necessasity for the meeting now after the state election commission on it's own decided reservation for wards, commune pancyhayats and municipalities, according to a party release here today.

The party took strong exception to the failure of the administration to delimit the wards and pointed out that the wards commune panchayats and municipalities remain the same since liberation from the French regeme. It also wondered why Villianur and Ariyankuppam commune panchayats with 80608 and 49338 voters respectively were not upgraded into municipalities while, Yanam with 32090 voters and Mahe with 29044 voters were given the status of Municipalities.

The election commission has not properly given reservation in Puducherry and Ozhukarai municipalties, the party charged. The state election commission failed to convene an allparty meeting earlier to set all these issues right and also failed to hold by-elections to fill up the vaccancies arising out of death or resignation, A DMK delegation led by former minsiter S P Sivakumar attended the all party meeting today.
