The famous 'Jagadhatri Mela', celebrating its Diamond Jubilee, kicked off today in this small town of the tribal dominated Mayurbhanj district with great pomp and fanfare.

Considered to be one of the biggest festive occasions, the Mela will continue till December with an attractive exhibition of 350 stalls, of which 150 are from West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand.

President of Mela committee Prasanta Kumar Patnaik and vice-president Krushnananda Mohanty told newsmen here today that this year the special attraction would be a replica of the famous 'Lalita Mahal', built in 1921 by the then King of Mysore for the comfortable stay of the Viceroy-IV to his state.

At least thirty skilled artisans from West Bengal and a noted decorator from Cuttack were working hard to raise the structure.

Last year, the replica of the 'White House' Washington DC had attracted quite a good crowd and earned great admiration from thousands of visitors, the organisers said.
