The Tamil Nadu Government had permitted the Puducherry students to take French or Hindi as optional subjects in public examinations, Chief minister N Rangasamy said here today.
Speaking at the Children's Day celebrations here, Mr Rangasamy said the Tamil Nadu Government in 2006 had issued an order making Tamil compulsory.
As far as Puducherry is concerned, the French culture still prevails here and the study of French should be permitted as per an agreement at the time of the merger of Puducherry with Indian union.
With people from different states living here, the Puducherry administration had requested the Tamil Nadu government to permit Puducherry students to take Hindi and French as optional subjects which was accepted.
Mr Rangasamy thanked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for the gesture.
