An exhibition-cum-sale of paintings and sculptures by Kerala's most talented contemporary artists will among the major highlights of the South Indian Bank Grand Kerala Shopping Festival which begins next month, Raja Ravi Varma Award winner and celebrated sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman said here today.

A committee chaired by the celebrated sculptor has already begun preparatory work for the contemporary art festival which is scheduled to be held from January 3 to 26 at Kanakakunnu Palace here.

It will feature pieces of art by more than 200 artists from around the state and will be a one-of-its-kind platform for them to not just showcase their works but also find buyers, Kanayi Kunhiraman said.

"There are so many exceptionally talented artists in Kerala who often lack the opportunities to display their work at major art marketing centres outside the state. We hope to address this problem through the festival," he said.

"Works of local artisans are rarely promoted from a business point of view. We want to help them find a market and get the recognition they deserve," he said A wide range of contemporary styles and media is expected to be represented at the festival. For the artists it will be a wonderful opportunity for creative expression. GKSF Season 6, which runs from December 15 to January 31, coincides with the peak tourism season in Kerala. As such, the art festival is expected to attract a large number of domestic and foreign visitors.

"It will be great for Kerala's art scene if the sculptures and paintings produced here make their way into galleries, homes and other spaces overseas. With GKSF we hope to create a continuous market for our artists," GKSF Director U V Jose said.

The Contemporary Art Festival will benefit from the massive, multi-media promotional drive planned for GKSF which also features a host of other attractions including thematic exhibitions, a 15-day Global Village and food festivals for its sixth season.

The registrations for the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival are proceeding at an impressive pace and more merchant establishments than ever before are expected to take part this time, taking advantage of the branding and sales opportunity it offers.
