Amid growing speculations about early polls, the Samajwadi Party (SP) on Friday announced its first list of candidates for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
The list of 55 candidates for the 80 Lok Sabha seats in the politically crucial north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh included the name of party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav among others.
Yadav will seek a re-election from Mainpuri seat.
"The party today releases its first list of 55 candidates for the coming elections, including 18 sitting MPs and MLAs, one minister and Speaker of the state Assembly," SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav told reporters.
The list also included the name of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's wife Dimple Yadav.
She is the sitting MP from Kannauj.
Akshay Yadav, Dharmendra Yadav, Gaurav Swarup, Nahid Hasan, SP Hasan, Anna Shukla, DN Singh and Surendra Patel are other important names in the list.
The SP announced the list of candidates a day after Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi was appointed the head of the Congress' election committee, in a move that indicated that the Nehru-Gandhi family scion will be the face of the ruling party for the 2014 general elections.
Gandhi, the son of party president Sonia Gandhi, will preside over the formation of alliances, creation of manifestos as well as the communication that the party will use to reach out to voters.
