At least three people including a cadre of the anti-talk faction group of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) were killed and five others injured in a gun battle with security forces in Assam's Majuli river island on Thursday, officials said.
Acting on a specific information, a joint team of Assam police and army had launched a search operation at Mandir Chapori area in the south part of the river island.
"When we reached the area, a five member armed group of the outfit had started firing on the security personnel and several bullets were exchanged," a top police official said.
During the encounter, three people were killed on spot.
"Other members of the armed group managed to escape from the encounter spot," police said.
Security personnel identified Rajeev Das, a hardcore cadre of the outfit group, who was killed in the gun battle.
The other deceased people were identified as Bhaben Pegu and Gada Ghosh.
The injured five people including a minor boy were admitted at Jorhat medical college hospital.
