Akhilesh Yadav inaugurates women powerline in Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, as a Bhaiyya Dooj gift to "sisters of the state" today inaugurated the women powerline 1090 call centre where women can register objectionable phone calls, SMS or MMS.
Mr Yadav inaugurating the call centre at his official residence here said the concept was developed by a team of senior police officials with the help of IT experts after several women complained to the government about their harrassment on mobile phones or through SMS to him personnally.
The Chief Minister stating his experience about the illegal ways the mobile phone is being used by the youths, said a party worker from Basti recently had threatened his staff members to provide him laptop immediately as promised by the party." However we let off the youth after giving him a warning," he stated.
DIG Lucknow range and in-charge of the project Navneet Sikera giving a presentation before the Chief Minister said Women Power Line-1090 will keep the identity of the complaining women secret and they will never be called to any police station or any other office.
Besides female police officers will attend their calls and the police department would remain in contact with the women complainant till the case is completely resolved, he further added.
The accused youths will be counselled for their misdeeds in the first phase and they will be warned that police will deny any cerfificate to them in future if they continue to harrass any women. Even if they repeat their act, the family members of the youth would be informed and later legal action would be taken, the DIG said.
Unlike the emergency police and fire service of dial 100 and 101, the women powerline number will not be toll-free though the service is at normal, applicable call rates.
