BRO announces closure of Manali-Sarchu Road
Manali-Sarchu (Leh in J and K) road has been officially declared closed for vehicular traffic, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) looking after maintenance and repair of this road announced today.
Commanding Officer of BRO at Manali, Col Yogesh Nayyar told UNI that due to early snowfall on the Rohtang and Baralachala passes, the Manali-Sarchu road had been declared closed.
"Deepak Project of the Union government had already announced it on November 11, 2012 that due to repeated spells of snow on the higher reaches, the road is declared officially closed," Col Nayyar said.
The BRO normally keeps this road open for vehicular traffic between June and October but due to mounting snow on the four major passes it had become unfit to continue traffic on it since late October to the first fortnight of November every year. Last year BRO had declared this road closed for vehicular traffic on October 31, 2011, he added.
Meanwhile, the entire deployment of labour and officials by the BRO was still widening the road and local vehicles were still plying on this strategic road.
